Ashland, Virginia

Hanoverians refer to Ashland affectionately as "The Center Of The Universe", because of its location in the exact center of Hanover County. The only incorporated town in Hanover, Ashland is 20 minutes north of downtown Richmond and a half an hour away from Richmond International Airport. Ashland home owners also find it a convenient place to live if you travel often, because it is less than 90 minutes from another major commercial airline hub—Washington D.C.'s Washington-Dulles Airport. Ashland is also in commutable distance of Washington, D.C. and Charlottesville, VA, both of which offer home owners in Ashland access to a myriad of additional work opportunities and leisure activities.
Ashland has a real small town flavor and a discernable local identity rooted in its history as railroad stop, which is evident in the turrets and porches facing the train tracks that run through the center of town. Ashland is home to the AVFD, one of the[AD]nation's oldest volunteer fire departments, and is the birthplace and lifelong home of Patrick Henry, American Revolutionary and famed crier of "Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death!"  Ashland has a reputation for safety due to its acclaimed police department, and biking, jogging, and walking are popular. Hanover County is known for its excellent public schools, and was recently named to the APA's 100 Best Communities For Young People (2007). Historic Randolph-Macon College dates back to 1830, and is located in the center of town. Ashland is also home to a significant amount of agriculture. Ashland Farmer's Market on Duncan Street is a weekly source of locally grown produce from May to November, including Amish crops and crafts, and Hanover tomatoes, which are coveted nationwide for their delicious flavor. For the really culinary-minded, Ashland also offers superb fine dining at the Henry Clay Estate Inn.
In addition to its natural beauty and quaint history, Ashland has modern city conveniences including four large shopping centers and well-groomed public parks. Ashland real estate is a lovely combination of beautiful townhouses, historic buildings, open farmland, and newly developed properties. The success of this combination can be attributed to Ashland's excellent civic government, which is committed to encouraging growth while preserving history, the parks system, and the unique character of Ashland's neighborhoods.  Median property values have increased by more than 50% since 2000, yet purchasing real estate here is still an affordable endeavor, even as the charming community of Ashland continues to grow steadily.
