Located within the Houston Metropolitan Area, the city is one of the most popular areas to live and work, with close to 96% of the homes in the area owner occupied at any given time. The city has a population of around 60,000 individuals
and encompasses a total area of slightly more that 30 square miles.
Originally advertised as "a land of genial sunshine and eternal summer," Missouri City has seen steady growth throughout its history, with occasional large influxes of new residents. The city was incorporated in 1956 and adopted a city council-manager form of government. The city was also one of the first to use natural gas, delivering it by pipeline as early as 1926.

Economy

Missouri City, Texas began as a railway town along the BBB&C railroad and many residents eked out their living by ranching or farming. As the city began to grow, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and depot that also housed the post office was added to the area. In subsequent years, many natural resources were found in the area, including oil, natural gas, and enough salt to open a salt mine. The residents of the area enjoyed a newfound prosperity because of the discoveries and new residents began to flock to the area. The city has seen regular periods of tremendous economic growth ever since.
Today, Missouri City, Texas is a "bedroom community" suburb of Houston. Many of the residents that live in the area commute to nearby
Houston for employment opportunities. The average commute time for these individuals is less than 35 minutes. Missouri City housing is mainly comprised of single family homes and luxury homes. There are not many apartment complexes or condos located in the area because of the zoning laws of the city. The average price for homes in the area is around $146,000.

Lifestyle

There are many reasons why an individual may choose a Missouri City relocation. Some of the newest residential housing available in the area is in the master planned community of Lake Olympia. There are over 500 miles of streets connecting neighborhoods in the area, along with 4 fire stations and 3 police stations. There are more that 50 public parks located throughout the city, allowing residents plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Because of the climate of the area, these public parks can be used year round.
Many of the residents of the city regard it as a safe and quiet community, far enough away from the large city of Houston to be a small community, but close enough that residents can enjoy all that the big city has to offer. Because Houston regularly has world class entertainment, along with shopping and many fine dining establishments, many residents of Missouri City travel to Houston for entertainment. The travel time is not great and there are several large highways available for individuals to move between cities quickly.
