The city was named after Collin McKinney, an individual who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and later represented the Red River district of the Republic of Texas in Congress.

The city has been a bustling center of commerce since its founding in 1848. The city's expansive economic development coupled with a lively and vibrant downtown district have created a place where individuals want to work, live, and play. Several companies have relocated their corporate headquarters to the area, adding a number of jobs to the local economy. There is also numerous employment opportunities located in nearby Dallas, and many individuals choose to make the daily commute.

There are close to 30 miles of biking and hiking trails located throughout the city. There are a number of restaurants, upscale boutiques, spas, and galleries for individuals to explore and several entertainment venues where residents can relax, watch a show, or listen to music. There are also several museums and an extensive historic district that is considered one of the largest in a state with a high number of historic districts. Residents may also enjoy taking in a game played by the Dallas Revolution, an Independent Women's Football League Team.
The city has gained recognition in the last few years for its multiple LEED and Green (sustainable) buildings that have been built in the area. The city is the home of the first LEED certified Automotive Dealership and the first LEED Platinum office building. It is also the home of an experimental sustainable Wal-Mart store. These items have gained the city national media attention and have attracted visitors from all over the world. These buildings have become hallmarks for future projects within the United States and in various other portions of the world. It is believed that a number of future McKinney real estate projects will also strive to obtain LEED certification and create a number of sustainable businesses and buildings throughout the area.
