General Information

Located in northwest Texas, the city is about 120 miles away from Amarillo, Texas and nearly 300 miles away from the Dallas/Ft. Worth metropolitan area. The city has a population of
about 210,000 individuals and has a total area of 115 square miles. Originally founded in 1890 and named after the founder of the Texas Rangers, Thomas Saltus Lubbock, the city has grown from its modest roots into a city. The city has a mild, windy climate and sees an average of 30 inches of precipitation annually, two thirds coming from rainfall and the remaining third coming from snowfall. Temperatures range from the 100's on hot summer days to below freezing on cold winter nights.

Economy

The city of Lubbock, Texas has been nicknamed the "Hub City" because it is the hub of education, healthcare, and economy for the region. The city is also part of the largest cotton growing area in the world. Texas Tech University is located within the city limits and employs nearly 3,000 faculty members along with numerous support staff. Other employers with a large presence in the area include Covenant Health Systems, University Medical Center, Cingular (which is now changing its name to AT&T), and United Supermarkets. The City of Lubbock and Lubbock Independent School District also employ a large number of the residents of the city.
Lubbock real estate is comprised of nearly 85,000 housing units, around 10% of which can be found on the market at any given time. Neighborhoods are laid out in a simple grid pattern, so individuals that are new to the area can find their way around quickly. The average price of single family Lubbock homes is around $90,000 with an
average build year of 1972. There are also many condos, rental properties, and apartments available in the city, so an individual has a wide choice of housing in the area.

Lifestyle

The mild climate of the city allows the residents to enjoy outdoor activities year round. There are 75 parks located throughout the city and many neighborhoods are within walking distance of at least one of them. The Joyland Amusement Park is located within one of these city parks, providing fun and entertainment to the young and young at heart. There is an area of the city dedicated to nightlife and music which is called the Depot District. Located at the site of an old railroad depot, the district is home to a number of entertainment venues along with a radio station, a brewery, a winery, and several shops.
Lubbock was the birthplace of Buddy Holly, a rock and roll legend who died tragically in a plane crash. There is a museum and cultural center named for him and dedicated to his memory located in the heart of the city. A celebration honoring the traditional cowboy is also held in the city every year, called the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. This festival takes place in September and incorporates a chuckwagon cookoff, and a horse parade along with art, poetry, stories, and music honoring the traditional cowboy of the old west. The event draws thousands of visitors to the area each year.
