The city began as a small town with less than 400 residents, but a boom in the population occurred after 1940 when the military facility, Ft. Hood, was built adjacent to the city. During World War II, thousands of individuals moved to the area for the jobs created by the military installation. The area is served by the Killeen-Ft. Hood Regional Airport which offers non-stop, direct flights to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Houston, and Atlanta. There are also a number of highways that allow residents to travel to Waco, Austin, and San Antonio quickly and easily.

Economy

There is a strong military presence in the Killeen, Texas area due to the close proximity of Ft. Hood, located adjacent to the city. This military base employs a large number of soldiers and civilians to perform needed everyday tasks. The soldiers (and their families) also help to stimulate the economy of Killeen by doing their shopping and many of their recreational activities in the city. Other industries with a large presence in the city include construction, education, tourism and hospitality, and healthcare.
