Hopewell, Virginia
The City of Hopewell is a historic locale with a long heritage that dates back almost 400 years. Hopewell
began as City Point, which was founded by Sir Thomas Dale in 1613 at the junction of the James and
Appomattox Rivers. It served as a major battle site during the Revolutionary War, and by the time of the
Civil War, City Point was one of the busiest ports in the world. The Appomattox Plantation at City Point
is a historic Hopewellian home that acted as headquarters for the Union Army for the entirety of the
Siege of Petersburg, and is now a part of the Petersburg National Battlefield.
For architecture enthusiasts, the Crescent Hills area of Hopewell offers visitors the opportunity to tour
100% intact Sears, Roebuck & Co. mail order homes built between 1926 and 1937. Another historic
destination in Hopewell is Weston Manor Plantation, a stately colonial era plantation home on the
Appomattox River that is noted for its pristinely preserved interiors, which are full of antiques and
faithfully reproduced period furniture. The nation's first automatic dishwasher was manufactured in
Hopewell, and the city maintains a close connection with its history through activities organized in
concert with its twin city of Ashford, Kent, England. Delightful historical festivals that call Hopewell
home include the Americana Cruise-In Car Show and the Native American Tribute, a celebration of the
history and culture of the Chickahominy Tribe.
Hopewell is also conveniently located just 6 miles south of historic Turkey' Island on the James River.
Turkey Island was once home to War of 1812 veteran and Virginia magnate George E. Pickett, a Hopewell
resident who owned the island in its entirety. Pickett's real estate spanned the 1000 acres of the island,
and his intact mansion home is a popular tourist destination and the site of ongoing archaeological
study by the College of William and Mary.
Hopewell is home to excellent restaurants and night spots. Carr Brothers is a popular local sports bar,
and the Sunday buffet brunch at D.B.'s Junction is not to be missed. Hopewell is known throughout
Virginia for its waterfront views and its natural beauty. Much of the city of Hopewell is directly on the
water. Hopewell's parks system is expansive, and includes over 20 parks with a wide variety of facilities
and events. Because of its beautification projects and landscaping, Hopewell is winner of the Virginia
Governor's Clean City Award. Hopewell is a beautiful location to invest in real estate for those who
desire the beauty of nature at their doorstep, and big city conveniences just minutes away.
