Fairplay is a mere 1.1 square miles of Park County’s 2,210.69 total square miles and is located in what is called South Park. This area encompasses Mosquito and Park mountain ranges and was once part of the historic mining district called “Fairplay Diggings,” hence the town’s name. Most famously noted for being the place that inspired the television series South Park, Fairplay is known for its ranching, recreational mining and outdoor activities. Because of Fairplay's central location in Park County, residents of this community have easy access to some of the best fishing, hiking, camping and skiing in Colorado.

The quaint town now features modern retail businesses along the major highway and a cute historic district that sits on a bluff above the river along Front Street. In this area you will find many buildings that have been relocated to create an open air museum which is meant to illustrate how it was during the Colorado Gold Rush, called South Park City.
The majority of residents come to Fairplay looking for a quiet and simple way of life that is surrounded by the wilderness. Most of the homes in this community are located on the hillside to the east of Highway 9 closer to the schools and Park County Courthouse.
