Morrison, Colorado

If you plan to live somewhere far away from the hustle and bustle of Denver without having to sacrifice the convenience of the big city, then the city of Morrison is perhaps the best answer.

This historic town sits in Jefferson County, which is in the Denver - Aurora Metropolitan Area. Although it is only thirty minutes away from downtown Denver, Morrison's strategic location on one side of the Hogback rock formation gives it a distinct remote feel. That, and the fact that are only 415 people in town also adds to that remote mountain town atmosphere, which truly explains why people call the town "The Nearest Faraway Place".

The history of Morrison dates back to the Jurassic period. Fossils of the dinosaurs Apatasaurus ajax and Stegosaurus armatus were discovered in town during the late 1877. Today, the town takes pride of these prehistoric findings by housing several fossils in the Morrison Natural History Museum and by reworking the original digs made in the 1870s.

The Denver International Airport is the closest major airport to the city, and is just 31 miles from the town center.

Things To Do in Town

Morrison is mostly popular because of its outdoor concert venue, the Red Rocks Park Amphitheater. While the amphitheater is indeed a spectacle (especially during a live concert), there are certainly more things to look out for in this town.

The town sits at the Bottom of the winding Bear Creek Canyon, and there are numerous world class shops and restaurants right along the historic Bear Creek Avenue. Jefferson Country Open Space Parks also has numerous trails that wind around the town and is perfect for hiking, biking or even horseback riding. Natural history fans will also have a great time at the Morrison Natural History Museum, where plenty of prehistoric items and artifacts are housed.

Of course, if you're feeling a little bored with the small town feel, you can always head northeast to Denver for the city sights and fun.
