The town of Kiowa is the county seat of Elbert County, which is part of the Denver - Aurora Metro area. Kiowa has wide open spaces for ranches and home properties, and still maintains its small town feel despite the developments around it.

The town was established back in 1869 and was first known as Wendling after one of the first settlers, Henry Wendling. Henry Wendling and George Fahrion purchased hay from the locals during the time when an Indian attack was feared. The name Kiowa, which was the same Indian tribe that the locals feared, was then given to the town.
