Berthoud, Colorado

Travel up north of Denver about fifty miles; halfway between Denver and Fort Collins just west of I-25, you'll find yourself in the small, picturesque town of Berthoud. About 5,000 people, plus a few extra, have already found this little slice of heaven ahead of you, but they're a welcoming bunch, so get ready to join in and become a real part of the community.

Berthoud is a little flatter than what most people expect to find in Colorado; this town rests on that finite piece of flat land north and east of Boulder where you can actually gaze off across the plains yet still have a breathtaking view of the Rockies. Don't let it fool you, though; you're still at 5,000 feet above sea level. It falls into what's known as the Front Range Urban Corridor, stretching from Wyoming down to Pueblo, and the population's growing every year.

The roads are lined with greenery, and the buildings aren't too close together. You'll see plenty of streets where the trees provide a graceful overhang all the way across. People who live here get involved in taking care of their community. Berthoud prides itself on being the Garden Spot of Colorado. You can join the Tree Board or the Garden Club or something else that suits your fancy. You'll find artistic types, too: Lots of people enjoy hoofin' it at the Square Dance Club or visiting the Wildfire Community Arts Center.

Berthoud came into being after the Civil War, during the Colorado Gold Rush. Many miners came and then left, but others fell in love with the scenery and stayed to farm the land instead. Over the years, the town just kept expanding, with a network of reservoirs and irrigation ditches fed by water from the Big and Little Thompson Rivers. Some of today's most popular crops include wheat, corn, barley, and alfalfa.

Traditional families make up over half of the population, earning $52,000 or so on the average, so it's a great place to settle down and raise some kids. Incomes are middle class to upper middle class, and homes are holding their value at slightly above the average in Larimer County. You'll find down-homey homes ranging from $150,000 and up, and for an extra $100K count on owning top features like granite countertops and maple cabinets.

Besides farming and ecological ventures, Berthoud, offers industrial opportunity like the steel fabrication plant in town. You're also close to Loveland, Fort Collins, or Greeley. In fact, Aims Community College, based in Greeley, pulls in people from all over the area.

Your kids will kick off the school year at one of the Thompson School District buildings, where seven system improvement projects are underway to boost performance levels for maximum student outcomes.

What else can you do around Berthoud? There's plenty cooking if you want to traipse up to Loveland, where valentines are mailed from all over the world every year and returned to their senders in February along with a unique romantic message. You're just a short jaunt from Rocky Mountain National Park, where you'll find plenty of golfing, hiking, water sports, camping, and horseback riding. Berthoud has something for just about everybody.
