Nederland, Colorado

The scenic town of Nederland is a statutory town of Boulder County, Colorado. It is located 17 miles west of Boulder, which is the county seat. Nederland is located up in the mountains of the county and is the entrance to the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area.

Nederland started as a silver ore mill which came from the silver mines five miles away at Caribou (which is now a ghost town). The mill was also used for tungsten ores which were found in surrounding mines as well. Nederland got its name from a Dutch mining company that purchased most of the mines in the surrounding areas.

The word Nederland means "low lands" in Dutch, and while it is high in the mountains, the name fit the town during that time. This was because the large boom town during that time was Caribou, which was situated high above Nederland. People from Caribou went down to Nederland to get some supplies.
