The town used to be a summer camping ground for the Ute Indians. Presently, however, it is home to around 1500, and has been a residential area for more than a hundred years.

The place where the town stands was first known as the North Fork of Turkey Creek. During the mid 1800s, it was then known as Parmalee Gulch, named after John D. Parmalee, one of the earliest settlers in town.
