Many people outside Colorado only think of Boulder when they think of green minded, outdoors oriented and bicycle loving communities; but many locals might actually think of Fort Collins instead. Overall the city is less expensive and just as laid back as Boulder but not as crowded. Fort Collins has more breweries per head than any other place in the state and is known as a college town cycling and mountain biking paradise. Additionally the river that runs through the city provides world-class kayaking and tons of walking and hiking trails. This community is so beautiful, that the picturesque Old Town area was actually used for inspiration in the building of Main Street in Disneyland. One thing if for sure, if you visit Fort Collins you will not be at a loss of things to do. Here are a few must sees if you are in Fort Collins.
The famous local New Belgium Brewing Company operates in a structure that exclusively uses green power. You can take a tour, hang around the comfortable beer tasting room, learn a lot about beer from the knowledgeable and friendly staff and drink up to five different generous portions of their best brews. All this is free but remember to call ahead to book a place if you are taking a tour. If you just want to visit the tasting room, you can drop by at any time.
Golf Digest Magazine has consistently chosen Fort Collins as a great place to play golf because of its seven courses and an indoor training range. Moreover, the golf courses are far more affordable than the courses in bigger cities. City Park Nine Golf Course is one of the three courses operated by the city and is widely regarded as the best nine hole course in Colorado. It is located in the heart of the city next to the famous cemetery in the middle of lush wooded terrain.
Avogadro's Number, which the locals fondly refer to as “Avo's" is a restaurant with live music which provides some of the best entertainment in the area. The music varies from night to night but you will generally like listening to the music and often there is no cover charge. It provides you with many bargain specials including a variety of vegetarian food. Because this is a college hangout, don't expect anything exceptional by way of service.
Drunken Monkey Cantina in Old Town Fort Collins is the cool hangout where all the kids go to party every night. The joint has swings instead of barstools and the decor features a tropical theme. Instead of the swings, you can choose a window seat from where you can watch the party. The bar offers every drink under the sun and delicious fish tacos to accompany your drinks.
