The air definitely had a chill to it this week and the first signs of fall in Colorado are starting to show up all around us. As the days get shorter and shorter, kids and families tend to get a little stir crazy going through the transition of the season. But, if you live in the Denver area it is not due to a lack of fun family activities available since almost every weekend from now until Christmas is packed with festivals, special events, free museum days, and plenty of outdoor fun for all. Here’s what's happening in the Front Range area of Colorado this October.
Oktoberfest - September 27th - 29th, 2013 www.thedenveroktoberfest.com Downtown Denver will be hosting their family friendly version of Munich, Germany’s ever popular Oktoberfest, complete with German style attractions like live music, performances, children’s activities and of course, tons of German style beer and food. (Ever wonder why they call it Oktoberfest when most of them take place in September?)
Free Target Tuesday Nights at the Children’s Museum of Denver - October 1st , 2013 www.cmdenver.org Stop by the Children’s Museum in Denver the first Tuesday of each month from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. and discover the fun for free! With seasonal exhibits, interactive playscapes, programs, and special events, the Denver Children’s Museum is a great place for kids to let go, learn and have some fun this fall!
Fright Fest - Open Now through October 31st, 2013 www.elitchgardens.com Fright Fest is an awesome way to tucker out the family! If you have never been, you will not want to miss out on the seasonal extravaganza that transforms our beloved Elitch Gardens into a frightfully spectacular sight! With fun haunted houses for the older kids and their free trick or treat trail for the little ones, Fright Fest will have everyone wishing it could be fall all year round.
Pumpkin Fest - October 11th - 13th, 2013 www.botanicgardens.org/content/pumpkin-fest Usually known for their sprawling gardens, the Denver Botanical Gardens would like to invite you come and pick your pumpkins with them this year. Not only do they have their huge pumpkin patch where families can choose from thousands of ripe pumpkins and gourds, but there are also tons of children's activities, handcrafted goods, a corn maze, farm animals, and carnival rides available for your enjoyment!
Festival of Scarecrows - October 12th, 2013 www.arvadafestivals.com Hosted in downtown Arvada, this event features a scarecrow contest, pumpkin patch, kids costume parade, community vendor booths, hay wagon rides, a giant pumpkin contest and tons of opportunities to make fun fall family memories!
Denver Zombie Crawl - October 19th, 2013 www.eyeheartbrains.com Okay this one might be as family friendly as the rest of the events, but undoubtedly it is one of the most fun and unique things happening in Denver this October. As the largest undead event in the Nation, the Denver Zombie Crawl is in its 7th year and organizers are aiming high to capture a Guinness World Record this October 19th!.
Boo at the Zoo - October 26th - 27th, 2013 www.denverzoo.org This event is by far my favorite way to celebrate Halloween with the little one! The transformation of the Denver Zoo into a haunted Halloween funland is an amazing and safe way to trick or treat with kids of all ages. This event fills up fast and if you don’t buy your tickets ahead of time online you will be standing in line for hours. Either way it is totally worth it! (Don’t forget the next free zoo days for Colorado residents are November 4th, 15th, and 21st!)
