History of Amarillo, TX

Amarillo, Texas, the 14th largest city in Texas, is a very diverse and interesting place to visit. There are many different things in this city that not very many people not
from Texas have heard of. There are many major employers including a nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly plant. This nuclear weapon facility is the only one in the entire United States that is an assembly and disassembly plant. Many other things such as the largest meat packing areas and the Cadillac Ranch make Amarillo a favorite place to visit for many people that have been there. For the people that have not been there, it is highly recommended by many.
The city was established in 1887 and was originally named Oneida. The name changed to Amarillo after a flower that bloomed every spring in the city became the trademark. Amarillo is rich in history and has many stories to tell including great depression and the creation of air fields.

Climate

The climate of Amarillo is much like any other in the southwestern states including dry heat. The winters in Amarillo do get a little chilly with temperatures in the 40's.
The summers in Amarillo can get extremely hot with high temperatures in the low 100's. It is located in tornado alley and so can get some extremely powerful storms.

Things to do in the area

There are countless things to do in Amarillo including many natural and man made events. Parks such as the Palo Duro Canyon State Park is highly recognized as one of the nation's largest canyons coming in second behind the Grand Canyon. There are also rodeo festivals throughout the year and there are many contests including eating contests. There are also opera, symphony, and ballet concerts put on in the city for the people looking for something different than the rodeo. The best thing about the city of Amarillo is the vast amount of diversity that it has so that it can accommodate anybody from anywhere.
Amarillo also has many sporting events including hockey, indoor football and college football just to name a few. There really are countless things to do in the area and the above are just a tiny amount of events that are held in Amarillo each year. Having a city with that many things to do makes it a perfect stop for a vacation route or a perfect place to live.
