The city was established in 1887 and was originally named Oneida. The name changed to Amarillo after a

ClimateThe climate of Amarillo is much like any other in the southwestern states including dry heat. The winters in Amarillo do get a little chilly with temperatures in the 40's.Things to do in the areaThere are countless things to do in Amarillo including many natural and man made events. Parks such as the Palo Duro Canyon State Park is highly recognized as one of the nation's largest canyons coming in second behind the Grand Canyon. There are also rodeo festivals throughout the year and there are many contests including eating contests. There are also opera, symphony, and ballet concerts put on in the city for the people looking for something different than the rodeo. The best thing about the city of Amarillo is the vast amount of diversity that it has so that it can accommodate anybody from anywhere.
Amarillo also has many sporting events including hockey, indoor football and college football just to name
a few. There really are countless things to do in the area and the above are just a tiny amount of events
that are held in Amarillo each year. Having a city with that many things to do makes it a perfect stop for
a vacation route or a perfect place to live.
